Maine has the highest percentage of older adults in the nation. For nationally recognized aging expert, consumer researcher, and Age Frontier founder Matt Thornhill, that is not a problem to solve. It is an opportunity that could define the next chapter of Maine’s story.

On Monday, October 5, Matt will bring that perspective to Age Forward: Building Maine’s Future Together, Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s signature fundraising event at our Portland Center.

During his presentation, The Next Chapter in Maine’s Story, Matt will challenge us to think differently about what Maine’s changing demographics mean for our communities, workplaces, and future.

The numbers tell an important story. Maine’s prime working-age population is projected to shrink while the number of people age 65 and older continues to grow. For decades, many service models have relied on a large population of younger workers and volunteers supporting a smaller number of older adults. That math has changed.

But Matt sees possibility in that change.

Older adults are not only people who may need services. They are also experienced workers, volunteers, caregivers, mentors, leaders, and neighbors with the ability to strengthen their communities. Many will continue contributing well into their 70s, 80s, and beyond.

Because Maine is experiencing this demographic shift ahead of much of the country, we have an opportunity to lead. The ideas, partnerships, and solutions developed here could help shape how communities across the nation respond to an aging population.

For 50 years, our organization has helped older adults remain healthy, independent, connected, and engaged in the communities they call home. That commitment is not changing. But Maine is changing, and we are preparing to meet this moment with a name and identity that better reflect the people we serve, the work we do, and the future we are working to build.

Guests will gather under the tent for a cocktail reception, a seated dinner inspired by our Meals on Wheels program, Matt’s thought-provoking presentation, and the first public look at our organization’s next chapter.
