Our highly-skilled Medicare Team at the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) can help you navigate the many choices available in your area. Our trained health insurance counselors are available to assist by phone and zoom. SMAA will not be offering any in-person appointments during 2021 due to COVID-19.

Welcome to Medicare

If you are new to Medicare our Welcome to Medicare Seminars offer participants valuable information presented in plain and understandable language. These seminars will cover all of the important basics you need to know as well as options that may be useful as you make your enrollment decisions. Pre-registration is required. Currently offered via zoom! This seminar offers more in-depth information about Medicare a chance to ask questions and is the best tool to prepare you for your one-on-one appointment. Individuals new to Medicare, those who could benefit from a refresher, or those who are unable to attend a Welcome to Medicare Seminar, can attend our online-video version of our Welcome to Medicare Seminar. Comparing Medicare Plans? Learn How to Use the Medicare Plan Finder

If you are new to Medicare or, if you are considering looking for a more effective and appropriate Medicare Plan for yourself or a loved one, this course is for you. In this session you will be introduced to the most used tool on Medicare.Gov, the Medicare Plan Finder.This tool will allow you to view online, in real-time, all the approved Medicare Advantage Plans (MAPs) and all the Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs) that are available to you in your area. 

This course will focus primarily on navigating the Medicare.Gov website. This session will also show you how to create your own MyMedicare account and will have an in-depth review of the features and functionality of the Medicare Plan Finder.  This will allow you to do your own personalized search for plans that best meet your Medicare insurance needs.

It is highly recommended that you attend the Welcome to Medicare Seminar or have a good understating of the parts of Medicare before attending this course.

SHIP logoOne-on-one health insurance counseling appointments can be scheduled after you have attended a Welcome to Medicare Seminar. These appointments will pair you with a trained State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) counselor who is either a Southern Maine Agency on Aging staff member or a highly-trained volunteer. All counselors are highly-skilled and trained to provide support and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries in understanding their plan choices. You can also learn about programs in Maine that help lower the cost of prescription drugs and other out-of-pocket medical expenses. SHIP services are free, confidential and available to older people and people who have Medicare because of a disability. SHIP Counselors do not sell insurance or recommend policies. All Medicare beneficiaries are encouraged to review their plans yearly. Learn more about SHIP Counselors and services.

Time for a Benefits Check Up?

There are programs available that may be able to assistance with the cost of your Medicare! These programs are based on your income and assets.

To see if you qualify, please review our self-assessment checklists and then call us at 1-800-427-7411 to make an appointment for application assistance.

You may also use the National Council on Aging's Benefits Check Up tool. This is a free, national website that identifies programs available to help older adults. You will complete a confidential online questionnaire. Then a customized report will be generated and will provide you with programs you may be eligible for as well as application information for each.
