make a giftSupport SMAA

We are grateful for the gifts we receive each year that support our mission to improve the quality of life for older adults, adults with disabilities, and the people who care for them. No matter the amount, every gift makes a difference for older adults in Cumberland and York counties..

Dear Friends,

It's been more than a year since the start of the pandemic, and so many of us are feeling the "anniversary effect" of this crisis.  COVID-19 has exposed many of the challenges that older adults face every single day:  access to nutritious food, the ability to get to a doctor's appointment, healthcare needs, and the devastating effects of social isolation and loneliness that can be a severe detriment to mental and physical health.
The Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) has been assisting a growing number of older adults. In the last year, SMAA has distributed 314,682 meals, connected 99 seniors with Phone Pals, started a Tech Pal program to enhance connectivity, and scheduled 1,586 older adults for their COVID-19 vaccine. SMAA needs your support, now more than ever, to ensure that Maine's older adults can continue to receive the programs and services they need to survive during these critical times.
Pam's story reflects why this work is so important:
When Pam's husband passed away, she was already struggling with overwhelming sadness. She made a conscious effort to stay socially connected by joining a book club, having lunch with friends, and volunteering. Combatting loneliness was hard enough, but Pam completely lost those community connections that she worked so hard to build when the pandemic hit. It didn't take long for her to start declining; alone and fearful that going out in public could cause her sickness or death, she felt isolated and alone. She was sleeping more, far less active, and falling into a deep depression. Pam's only interaction was with Tom, the Meals on Wheels volunteer who visited twice a week. Tom noticed Pam's decline and reached out to SMAA for help. The team at SMAA connected her with technology through the Tech Pal program so she could FaceTime with family and set her up with regular Tai Chi classes that she could
do from the safety of her home. They also connected her with a Phone Pal to check in with her during the week.

SMAA actively helped Pam out of social isolation, one program at a time. She was receiving nutritious meals through Meals on Wheels, actively engaging in exercise, and connecting with people like Tom and her Phone Pal. Still, the turning point for Pam was when a SMAA volunteer scheduled her for her first vaccine. For Pam, this was a light at the end of the tunnel; lunch with friends, volunteering, reduced fear, feeling whole.
SMAA is working to ensure that all older adults in our region can access the vaccine through a partnership with Northern Light Home Care & Hospice. Whether someone is homebound, in a rural area, needs an interpreter, or is without internet, we will ensure they can get vaccinated.
We need YOUR help to continue to provide these services during this critical time. Please give today! With your help, we can bring hope for older adults in York and Cumberland Counties.
Thank you for the role you play in keeping older Mainers safe and healthy and for continuing to elevate the importance of taking care of our neighbors during this time.
