SMAA CEO Megan Walton Talks 55+ Housing Shortage in MaineBiz

Maine’s population is aging rapidly – and the demand for affordable senior housing is outpacing supply.

At Southern Maine Agency on Aging, we see the strain firsthand. Rising costs, longer life expectancy, and limited housing options are forcing more older Mainers – especially those with modest incomes – out of the communities they’ve long called home.

In a recent MaineBiz article, our CEO Megan Walton shared:  “It’s sad and it’s also scary, because these are people who, in a lot of ways, have done everything right.”

The greatest challenge lies in the “middle market” – older adults who don’t qualify for subsidized housing, but can’t afford market-rate options. With 1 in 5 adults 50+ lacking retirement savings, the need for affordable, accessible housing is urgent.

At SMAA, we’re committed to advocating for housing that supports aging with dignity, stability, and choice.
