Navigating Policy Changes

As our communities and clients continue to navigate a changing policy environment, I am so proud to see how SMAA’s mission and core values — client-centered, belonging, innovation, community-focused, impact-driven, and team-oriented — remain at the heart of everything we do. The landscape may be shifting, and the future feels uncertain at times, but SMAA’s work to foster social connections for our clients and support our communities in Maine is more vital than ever.

Since January, we’ve navigated a period of uncertainty as the policy landscape continues to evolve. We are continuing to closely monitor the situation and stay informed so that SMAA is prepared to respond proactively to any future challenges. Last month, two of SMAA’s leaders, Ashley Perrone and Meredith Anderson, represented Maine and SMAA in Washington, D.C., at USAging’s annual policy briefing. They met with members of Congress, attended workshops, and collaborated with other AAAs from across the country. SMAA will continue to emphasize the critical need for supporting vital programs like Medicaid HCBS, SNAP, LIHEAP, the Older Americans Act, elder justice initiatives, LTCOP, elder abuse prevention, and more.

Here in Maine, the Older Mainers Act (LD 814), which all AAAs are advocating for in the Maine legislature, is gaining momentum. This bill calls for increased investment in community-based services for older residents through funding to AAAs for vital programs like case management, Meals on Wheels, caregiver supports, Medicare counseling, and more. SMAA staff, volunteers, Board members, and clients from across Maine testified in support of LD 814 during the public hearing. SMAA staff also testified on advocating for the continued support of the Respite for ME program, which has provided invaluable relief for caregivers.

Please continue to reach out and stay updated with us as we move forward. During challenging times, it is more important than ever to stay connected and support one another.
