SMAA'S COMMITMENT TO THE LGBT COMMUNITY

June is LGBT Pride month and a reminder to celebrate the progress made toward equality by LGBT individuals, advocates and allies!  Now more than ever, our world needs empathy, humility, inclusion and equality for all. Be a part of the movement toward positive change by joining a virtual event hosted by Equality Maine at https://equalitymaine.org/events

In an effort to reduce isolation and promote well-being during this time, SAGEConnect was established to link LGBT elders with their broader community. If you or someone you know would benefit, please reach out at https://www.sageusa.org/sageconnect/ or by calling 929-484-4160.  Also, please find tips and resources for LGBT older adults related to COVID 19 at- https://www.lgbtagingcenter.org/resources/resource.cfm?r=990

SMAA is committed to taking meaningful steps towards inclusivity for LGBT older adults and diverse populations through achieving Silver level credentialing through SAGECare in 2020. SAGECare (www.sageusa.care) is a division of SAGE, the country’s oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT older adults. (Read the full press release on SMAA's credentialing.)

The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the riots held by members of the LGBT community against a police raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn in New York City on June 28, 1969.

In 1978, Harvey Milk, San Francisco city supervisor and one of the first openly gay elected officials in the US, commissioned a flag for the city's upcoming Pride celebrations. Gilbert Baker, an artist, designer and a prominent gay rights activist, designed the flag which gave a nod to the stripes of the American flag and drew inspiration from the rainbow to reflect the many groups within the gay community.
