Southern Maine Agency on Aging Opens Stewart Center, Innovative Adult Day Center in Falmouth

OCTOBER 20, 2014 (Scarborough, ME) – The Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) has opened a state of the art adult day center in Falmouth to serve people living in the community with dementia. The Stewart Center, located in the repurposed Lunt School on the OceanView campus, will offer evidence-based programs to individuals coping with dementia built on the latest advances in environmental gerontology. For more than three decades, SMAA has been a leader in providing therapeutic programs for people with dementia and support for their family caregivers through its Truslow Adult Day Center in Saco. Those services are now being expanded to the greater Falmouth area. At the Stewart Center, family caregivers will learn skills to manage the challenges a dementia diagnosis brings, while members attending the Center will enjoy fellowship and customized therapeutic activities designed to stimulate and engage them. The Stewart Center is named in honor of Tim and Howsie Stewart, long time SMAA supporters and family caregivers who truly understand the growing need for adult day services.

“Both the Stewart Center and Truslow Center in Saco focus on what the individual member has retained, not what he or she has lost because of dementia,” stated Laurence W. Gross, Executive Director, SMAA. “Activities are person-centered and, in many cases, member-directed to provide a stimulating experience that restores social connection with other members.” “Next year we will relocate our Saco center to a new purpose-built location on Barra Road in Biddeford enabling us to implement our new program design fully in northern York County.” Gross continued. “We are grateful for the leadership and courage shown by the Stewart family. We are also gratified by the incredibly positive and generous support we have received from so many donors that brought this resource to Falmouth.”

The Stewart Center will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Families with a loved one with dementia should call 1-800-400-6325 or email pbradley@smaaa.org for more information.
