Communications Specialist

Southern Maine Agency on Aging is seeking an energetic and experienced Communications Specialist. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and an outstanding writer, a natural storyteller, and a skilled project manager who enjoys producing content to be utilized in multiple channels and avenues.  This person will be in charge of developing and producing fresh content for the Agency’s website, social media sites, grant proposals and other printed materials to convey and promote a consistent and current image of SMAA to both internal and external constituencies.

Specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Using exceptional relationship building and storyteller skills in working closely with senior leadership, program managers, staff, volunteers and clients to promote the work of Southern Maine Agency on Aging.
  • Working closely with SMAA’s program managers and program teams to produce outreach and education materials for older adults and their care partners
  • Research and write feature stories, news releases, and other copy for print, electronic, and online publications, including SMAA’s website
  • Working with the Chief Advancement Officer and contracted grant writer to assist with researching, developing, writing and submitting grant proposals.
  • Assisting with the Annual Fund campaign, including writing appeal letters, developing a social media campaign and other strategies,  preparing donor acknowledgements, etc. 
  • Producing and managing website content, graphic design, photography, social media, and video to effectively tell the stories of SMAA’s clients and volunteers.
  • Producing the bi-monthly Senior News, and executing the Agency’s other regular newsletters.
  • Managing internal communications resources/inventory, including organizing data, lists, and assets (such as photos, graphics, flyers, invitations, etc.). 
  • Acting as lead in media relations, engaging local media and nurturing community connections, and generating press releases and media update. 
  • Assisting with planning and execution of development functions such as receptions and events.

Qualifications for the position include the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or Marketing, or the combination of education and related work experience, required. 
  • At least three years of prior related, professional-level work experience in Communications and/or Development required.
  • Flexibility and adaptability required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Expertise with Excel, Word and PowerPoint applications and familiarity with fund development software required; Raisers Edge proficiency preferred.
  • Experience with adobe InDesign, knowledge and experience using a variety of social media platforms, and photography, video, video editing preferred.
