Need help understanding your Medicare and health insurance options?

Our highly-skilled Medicare Team at the Southern Maine Agency on Aging can help you navigate the many choices available in your area. Our trained health insurance counselors are available to assist by phone, by appointment at our offices in Scarborough, and at various locations in the southern Maine community.

I am New to Medicare

If you are new to Medicare our Welcome to Medicare Seminars offer participants valuable information presented in plain and understandable language. These seminars will cover all of the important basics you need to know as well as options that may be useful as you make your enrollment decisions. Pre-registration is required.

Welcome to Medicare Seminars are offered regularly throughout the year at the following locations:

I am Eligible for Medicare and Need Assistance

One-on-one health insurance counseling appointments can be scheduled after you have attended a Welcome to Medicare Seminar. These appointments will pair you with a trained State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) counselor who is either a Southern Maine Agency on Aging staff member or a highly-trained volunteer. All counselors are highly-skilled and trained to provide support and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries in understanding their plan choices. All Medicare beneficiaries are encouraged to review their plans yearly.

One-on-one health insurance counseling appointments are offered regularly throughout the year at the following locations:

  • Bridgton Community Center, Bridgton
  • Dyer Library, Saco
  • The Center, Kennebunk
  • Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Windham
  • Westbrook Community Center, Westbrook
  • York Hospital, York

Medicare Open Enrollment

Medicare Open Enrollment takes place each year between October 15 and December 7. During this time period Medicare recipients are encouraged to review their Medicare Drug and/or Medicare Advantage plans.

Southern Maine Agency on Aging offers Medicare Open Enrollment appointments throughout southern Maine. Appointments can be reserved starting in September. To be informed when appointments are being accepted, sign-up for our email list or stay connected with Senior News.

Time for a Benefits Check Up?

If you are age 60 plus and single with an income below $1,872 per month, or a couple age 60 plus with an income below $2,350 per month, you may be eligible for more public benefits than you are currently receiving. SMAA can help you learn about and apply for programs that can save you money. Benefits may include:

  • Maine Rx Plus Program
  • Low Cost Drug Program (DEL)
  • Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP)
  • Food Supplement Benefits
  • Qualified Individual-1 (QI-1)
  • Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB)
  • Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB)
  • MaineCare
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Medicare Part D - Low Income Subsidy

You may also use theĀ National Council on Aging's Benefits Check Up tool. This is a free, national website that identifies programs available to help older adults. You will complete a confidential online questionnaire. Then a customized report will be generated and will provide you with programs you may be eligible for as well as application information for each.
