Programs & Services
Medicare D: Open Enrollment is October 15th through December 7th, 2012.
Medicare D is a federal program to subsidize the costs of prescription drugs. Sorting through the many Medicare D options (there have been more than 50 plans offered in Maine) can be overwhelming. Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s staff and volunteer Medicare Advocates can help you select your best options. We do not sell health insurance.
Medicare D Eligibility and Enrollment
If you are 65, you are eligible for Medicare D. Consider attending a "Welcome to Medicare Seminar" to learn more about your Medicare options. You can also compare prescription drug (Medicare D) options at www.medicare.gov. In fact, our Medicare Specialists use this site to help you decide on the plan that provides the best coverage for the lowest price.
Open enrollment for Medicare D is between October 15 and December 7. You can enroll for Medicare D at www.medicare.gov or attend one of our Medicare Seminars or afterwards, a one-on-one session to enroll. While there is no fee, we ask for a suggested donation of $35 for the seminar and a one-on-one appointment is included. No one will be turned away for the inability to make the suggested donation. Volunteers and donations help SMAA offer this service.
Annual Review of Medicare D Plans
Our Medicare Specialists advise all Medicare beneficiaries to review their prescription drug plan between October 15 and December 7 each year. This is the only time of year to make changes in your drug plan.
Reasons to Review Medicare D Plans
- To get the best coverage for the lowest premium. In the last year many of the 50 or so drug plans offered in Maine have changed either the drugs the plan covers or the premium charged.
- Your prescribed medications may have changed.
