The Sam L. Cohen Center

Opened in 2016, The Sam L. Cohen Center has become a new beacon of support for families living with dementia in southern Maine.

The Sam L. Cohen Center is a purpose-built, 10,000 square foot building that replaced the Truslow Center in Saco. Located on Barra Road, the new building will enable SMAA to double the number of participants served at our present location in Saco. The close proximity to Southern Maine Health Care, University of New England, and other medical arts practitioners, as well as other local organizations such as the YMCA, will allow greater program collaboration. Additionally, the new location will increase ease of access for members from Saco to the Kennebunks compared to our current location.

The Center will incorporate the latest research in environmental gerontology and will provide a home away from home experience for members. The use of warm colors, comfortable furnishings, and decorative touches will make the center an inviting and engaging space that will allow staff to fully implement a person-centered program for each of our members.

The use of different activity spaces, such as a therapeutic kitchen, arts and crafts space, a separate living room for games and puzzles, and a great room will help members enjoy activities and entertainment that decreases boredom, increases positive social interactions, and improves overall health and well-being.

The Center will also feature an enclosed garden where members will be able to enjoy the outside in a safe way without feeling constrained or restricted. The garden space will feature a patio with tables, raised garden beds, and even a putting green.
